On January 26th, the price of gold hit $5,000 per ounce. To put that into perspective, the price of gold just 10 years ago was $1,100 per ounce (~$1,500 if you adjust for inflation). Similarly, silver prices have tripled over the past year alone. This affects everything from the price of a jewelry box staple like a simple chain to custom pieces thoughtfully handcrafted by a goldsmith.
You may have a jewelry box—or, let’s face it, a shoebox—full of jewelry you’re not wearing. Maybe your former self’s style doesn’t suit current you, or you have some pieces from an ex you’re ready to thank and send on their way. Or maybe you were lucky enough to inherit someone’s finery that’s not your style but that you can benefit from.
Here’s the really good news: With gold prices at historic highs, and silver and platinum rapidly increasing, now is an excellent time to swing into action. Here are several great options:
Scrap it
HH clients are invited to bring in pieces to be scrapped. This includes tangled chains, single earrings, earring backs, and broken items. We’ll test and weigh the pieces and parts and give you store credit. If you’d like to keep any gemstones, we will remove them and return to you or suggest you incorporate them into a new piece. Which brings us to…
Repurpose or restore it
Our talented goldsmiths can work with you to design something that you’ll actually wear, using materials from the pieces you bring in. Want to turn your grandma’s diamond ring into a pendant? Can do! Then you can wear it every day! She would love that. We also resize rings and repair pieces that may just need a little love. Best of all, your scrap credit can be applied toward the work.
Donate it
Some items may not be valuable enough to scrap or rework (we will help you determine this). If that’s the case but it’s in good condition, we recommend donating it to individuals or organizations. Consider a medical professional who may have cared for a loved one. Consider holding onto it for family too young to appreciate it now but who will age into it. Favorite Hamilton Hill organizations include Pennies for Change, New Nearly New Thrift Store, Scrap Thrift, and Dress for Success. Please check each organization’s donation policies and schedules before you bestow them with your baubles.
To make an appointment to sift through your treasures, give us a call or a text at 919-683-1474. We look forward to working with you!
